Subscriber Features and Version 6

First off, everyone here at deviantART would like to say THANK YOU!!!
We have received an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm for the launch of version 6 and believe that this has been our best-received launch to date.
As of today, we have over 7200+ hearts on the launch article, and we’re closing in on 14,000 comments!  It’s nice to see that our blood, sweat and tears have been recognized and appreciated by you, our cherished community.  Big shout-outs to you all!

Fanfare aside, I am writing to also address a new feature of our v6 site that has concerned a few of our subscribers.  For those of you who don’t know what the hoopla is about, in our latest version of the site, we allow everyone, subscriber or not, to have thumbnails appear in the deviantWatch section of the message center, as well as a few other perks of a subscribed message center.

We apologize to all those subscribers that feel that they have been cheated, but this decision was made with the wholehearted spirit of the community in mind.

Like many of our features in the past, we thought that our entire user base, not a small minority of it, should benefit from having access to a tool that allows a quick and easy method of sharing your work.  It’s useful, it’s cool.  We thought it would strengthen our community, plain and simple.

To all of the subscribers out there, your time will soon come.  We are currently taking a good hard look at our subscriber and premium print packages and promise to be making some new additions in the next few months.  Now that we completed the launch, this area will now get our undivided attention.

To get this new project rolling we’ve been tossing around ideas in HQ that include things like new job classifieds section, CSS templates for enhancing profile journals, and instant messaging, just to name a few.  We have a few dozen ideas, but we want to hear from you.   Let us know what you think the next subscriber-only features should be.  And tell us soon so we can start tinkering away.

Lastly, to collect your ideas in a more organized way we will be sending out a detailed survey, at random, to a group of users and subscribers via Notes, so please keep an eye out for those in case your name is one of the people on the list!  We’re frantically searching for golden tickets to share with the lucky few…. ;)

We look forward to being absolutely bombarded with ideas so that we can continue to bring our community exactly what it wants.  Thanks again!    :lolly:

I love small add ons to websites. The ones you have endles hours of fun just looking at and toying around with, not caring if it has real meaning or not.

..im not much help, am i?
But i agree, i do feel slightly cheated with the thumbnails.

I would like to see who visits my deviations, and a page that says what deviation was viewed in the past 24 hours. thats my two cents :twocents:

Some enhancements I want to see:
  • Better text editor for Journals and deviation description.

  • Prints should be bundled with Subscriptions, but still give non-subscribers a choice if they want to have Prints enabled.

  • A choice to select exactly which deviations to show on the front page. I liked the old front page when all I saw was the deviations of the people I like

  • Better Journal and Deviations management. A good feature could be having the ability to delete multiple deviations at a time.

round and round and where you go nobody knows....
I had a break, came back and after all the spam, now i keep getting 'file not found' etc and never get to where i want...
it used to be such a great and simple to use site that i'd willingly recommend...only a few tweaks were needed!..this is just too much.
the best phrase in business is the 'kiss',,,,keep it simple, stupid.
go back to the old version and have a re think!

I don't know what you mean, that it's been received well.. I haven't talked to a single person on dA who actually like the new message center. It's awful, and I'm really upset that I pay to use this site and have no say in what gets changed.

The message center is painfully slow and disorganized. I don't want to see my devwatches and these huge journals in front of my comments.

My suggestion: Make it so you can opt to stick with the old version of dA. Like Myspace - they updated their look, BUT you can also choose not to use it. It's not cool to get used to something for years and then suddenly you've "fixed" something that wasn't broken in the first place =(

Personally I hate not being able to customize the front page. I don't know if front page customization is possible, but I really didn't like loosing that ability. Coming to the dA front page is the most irritating part of my dA experience. I don't want to see the most popular of the most popular.

You can actually choose to see all the new deviations.
Or the popular ones in the last eight hours.

Since this is an old comment, you might have figured it by now, but there's a tab in the upper right corner of the frontpage, just above all the deviations, letting you choose.

But, besides that. I think subscribers should be able to choose to have channels on their frontpage...

More side panel/journal features, widgets, and modules would be nice, and premade CSS templates sound great, as long as we have the option to still make our own CSS coding. It'd be lovely if you can categorize premade templates so users can know which ones can be edited to add/include custom images.

Being able to apply a CSS template to gallery front pages sound like a great way to attract people to renew their subscriptions; just to add color, designs, and images to backgrounds and headers, as I love the layout as it is.

I also really like the event calendar idea, as well as better control over Notes.

Comment editors to italicize/bold/underline font in comments sound great for people that are not HTML-handy, and I also like the idea of groups being established for subscribers; I personally have trouble finding clubs due to the inconsistencies between the club directories around the site.

PS: I LOVE V6 TO DEATH.

Well, I just thought about that a few hours ago when I did an icon for a friend.

What about that: Subscribers could use icons with more than 15KB. Like... 20KB?

Would be really great... as long as it wouldn't slow down the site (I don't know if it would). :/

The best subscriber feature that could ever be: Club mode!

Let it be possible to make a club, with features similar to those on SheezyArt and MangaBullet. People join simply by clicking, add artwork on their own, and the artwork links directly to the original so to prevent comments and favorites on the club! But they are sent to those who are in the club, in their message center.

Any subscriber should be able to make this extension on their account, give it a name and it has it's own journals and maybe a second writing area to add information on it.

Maybe have an automated divition for things like members, affiliates, contests and other, merged in to the account, ready to be edited with the specific information.

Don't just copy the others, add to it! An affiliation section is not in the others I believe. Make it so the club owner approves each affiliate, links from one club to another. Once both clubs approves there will be made a link from one another =)

And a build in section for contests, which is the main purpose of clubs, would also be great. We are all about art, and contests are all about inspiering people to draw =^_^=

I have a club with 1700 members, actively subscribed since 2004.
+ one actively subscribed since 2005 (with not so many members.. 50+ I guess...)

Add a club feature to subscribers and I will continue to subscribe those accounts, and maybe even think up new clubs to hold on my two normal accounts which I also hold subscribed (Yes, I have 4 accounts constantly subscribed)

Even thou we had only normal accounts to work with, we tried to make the best out of it. For what time it made us put in to it.

If it weren't for DA clubs I wouldn't draw half of what I draw. If it weren't for clubs I wouldn't know most of my now best friends. If it weren't for clubs I wouldn't be here, they are what keeps this site alive for me. If it weren't for clubs I would be nothing, they kept me alive when my life was at the worst... If it weren't for clubs I would be dead.....

Make this club extension and you make my life complete!

I noticed you have cancelled all the polls and buried the results in cyber space, was the item below also arrogantly abandoned

"Lastly, to collect your ideas in a more organized way we will be sending out a detailed survey, at random, to a group of users and subscribers via Notes, so please keep an eye out for those in case your name is one of the people on the list!”

Also very nice replacement poll, since whether or not I go to the circus is understandably more important to your members than their opinion of V6.

Maybe subscriber only forums? Just a few, but it would be good for them to be able to talk to fellow subscribers only. There would be very little spam or off topic posts because people would be paying to be there.
In addition, more modules for their user-page. (Or whatever it's called.)
These can also be customized and moved around, some could be deleted etc. In addition, maybe one could change their user page/journal colour theme from a selection provided.

i do agree with you on that...cause its been what...a couple of weeks...i still havent seen anything worth paying a subbie for.

basically all there is really is dressing up my journal so to speak, which right now i am willing to pay for because im running a contest, but after its over, im not so sure i wanna keep a subbie unless something really worth is paying for...i mean the 120 deviations per page...thats "ok" cause it really doesnt do much for me...and the wayback 2000 thing...never used it. >< LOL.

i mean a subbie isnt that expensive but it does add up to the countless other things i pay for ><

*sigh* i love dA but its just a little hard to believe that subscribers really have not to much a difference between non-subscribers

To be honest even if the non subscribers didn't get thumbnails, etc. I think we would still be getting screwed. V6 deviant watch is horrible compared to it's previous version. I hate going threw thumbnails and deleting them, then go to view something full screen and then hit the back button to end up at the first page of thumbnails with all the deleted ones still there. The interface looks cool but it isn't working like it used to.
I won't renew my subscription if the bugs don't get fixed.

Personally, I say that the instant messaging would be a bad idea, and music on pages too. I remember on sheezyArt I was bothered by loud playing music, when I ma usually permanently listening to my own music.

As for the customisation, of the whole page, it could be a very good idea, but if we stay in some kind of dA tone...

For example, you want to make it pink, then it won't be SUPER KILLER PINK it will be a pink in the tone of the dA green...just a bit gray or something like that...
    oh I hate explaining XD

Anyway, I can't wait to see the new suscriber features!

I really can't stress enough how much I HATE the new message center. I hate it. So very much. It's unbearably slow, there are devs and journals before my comments, and things don't delete correctly.

I'm pretty pissed that I'm paying for this, I thought it was perfectly fine, then you come along and "fix" it to the point where I can't stand answering any of my comments 'cause it takes so damn long and there are devs in the way.

There should definitely be an option to continue using the old version of dA - like with Myspace, you don't have to use the new 'upgraded' version, you can stick with classic - because I've been using it for 3 years and loved it.

And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, many of my friends on here aren't happy either. PLEASE take this into consideration.

oh, and another point I would like to make, concerning user pages. Being able to customize them any more than the journals and few sub features is a bad idea. This is deviant ART! Too much customization might, display some creativity, but would more than likely distract from the art.

And again I say... fix the bugs first.

Just in case you don't get it from most everyone else's comments... IM is a bad idea. Most everyone already has aim, or aol, or msn, or whatever... a new one is not needed.

DO NOT make deviantart a new version of myspace. I chose da over myspace because I liked that it wasn't really myspace. Yes, people could change their journals, but the pages stayed the same, and that gives it a sense of uniformity that puts everyone on an equal playing feild, in a sense. Plus, whole page css stuff could really slow computers down.

And I agree, with the message center stuff. The only reason I still like having a sub now is because of the lack of ads while browsing.

What I would suggest is, before coming up with more perks, work on the bugs! Whenever I browse, I'm immediately taken to "popular" when I would like to browse "newest." It takes longer than usual to open the message center. I really think you should fix the message center also so that when I click "messages" up top, it opens just the messages. I like to save my deviations for last, and seeing them right away is annoying.

And the submitting section needs help. I've been trying to fix a typo in one of my literature peices and I have been sitting at my computer for two hours while I wait for the file to finish loading/updating. It still won't!

Bottom line: no IM, no second myspace, and fix the bugs first!

I think being able to edit CSS for the shoutboard would be lovely. It looks out of place if you have spent time making CSS for all your other journals. I dont like the idea of the jobs category though. DA is a place for art and feedback. This is my humble opinion but who is going to be getting all the jobs? All the people with millions of pageviews. It's just going to help the people who already get loads of jobs and paid work and they got there on there own, just like many people could now.

Yes, please freeze our subs, or give us additional time equal to what you are taking. I've been spending money on subs for the devwatch preview thumbnails, not for fancy css stuff, thought I do enjoy the fancy stuff.

I don't really care about an IM system and I'm not sure how helpful or useful the classified adds would be.

Personally I'm pretty miffed that purchasing a print at the artist rate was originally a feature for everyone, but now you say this was never meant to be and you're taking it away. It's funny how something that was never meant to be was pushed at me as a benefit of changing the print subs to a yearly/free thing - that I could just order prints at the artist rate and sell them myself, so I should be happy to be getting a free prints account. That being said, how about making artist rate prints available to regular subscribers? Also, I'd like for the portfolio to work correctly (you can only see it if you're logged in to dA) and taken out of beta. That would make another nice sub feature. Perhaps being able to turn off comments on your user page, not just for deviations, would also be useful? I liked being able to customize my front page, what happened to that feature?

The devwatch and message centers are set to thumbnail and date order view by default now. It would be nice to be able to change that to list and view by artist and have it stay that way until changed again. I've seen some people who aren't subscribers complaining about v6 slowing their computers down. I'm guessing it's the thumbnails that are slowing things down for them, so giving folks an option that would stick would be nice.

...If nothing else, then sending a massage therapist to subscriber's homes once a week for a free massage would be acceptable to me... :paranoid:
