As many of you know, the Mature Content filter was changed pretty drastically to an 18 and older system. This was necessitated by abuse of the system and was put in place as a stop gap measure while we gathered in depth opinion from the community as to what they desired to see in place, and from the artists who post such work.
If you would like to see the course of those events please check out my last several journals as they document this as well as other policy related discussions.
That said, we have made some pretty significant changes to the filtering system to allow for the most flexibility to everyone involved, from viewer to artist. One of the biggest issues we faced was people simply not marking their work if it was mature content or not, and this was mainly due to that option being buried at the bottom of the submission process. To balance that we have now made checking yes or no to Mature Content mandatory to complete your submission. T

Improved DMCA Reporting System

Hello, deviants! In an effort to keep the community informed and to provide the best possible experience for our members, we wanted to inform you of changes to our reporting system.
DeviantART is dedicated to protecting our artists, and in an effort to be able to more quickly handle complaints by deviants who have had their rights infringed on, we have changed the way we receive complaints from the artist or the copyright holder.
In the past, we took reports by the copyright holder in two different ways: An informal report via the Report Violation tool and a formal complaint via contacting the Help Desk. While both of these methods were effective, they presented many setbacks.

The informal report did not gather all the necessary information for a formal copyright complaint and was prone to misuse by well-meaning deviants who would attempt to report images they did not own the copyright to

CEA Update : Defining pornography in LiteratureIt has been long assumed that the literature guidelines could be inferred from the guidelines governing image submissions, however actual feedback from the gallery Directors who interact with the literature community has indicated that this assumption is incorrect and that many members willfully feign confusion over the rules in order to submit clearly pornographic content.
To this end we will attempt to first clarify the perceived differences between allowed erotic literature and the type of literature which should be deemed pornographic and therefore prohibited. I would like to specifically point out that the explanations and guidelines that follow are not new and in fact simply detail the way deviantART policy has been applied to literature for several years.
The difference between erotica and pornography as defined by dictionary definitions is fairly non-existent, as much of what is considered erotic encompasses explicit sexual themes. Therefore we should clarify that

For the past 5 years our very own $Moonbeam13 has been involved in supporting and raising money for The Weekend To End Breast Cancer event in Toronto.

She has done this in a fairly quiet and discreet way so we felt it was time to shed a bit more light on what exactly she does for this great cause.

To give a bit of background, in the past 4 years this organization has raised over 60 million dollars in donations and through this has made some landmark strides in advancing the research on breast cancer, which claims the lives of close to 50,000 women a year and about a quarter million women diagnosed per year.

The Big Spring Clean project is aimed at doing just that very thing. Making sure that our galleries are spick and span, and that everything is in it's right place. CEA UPDATE: Clarifying the Definition of PornThe official definition of " pornography " has been modified at several points over the lifetime of deviantART in an attempt to bring greater clarity in the wording used however portions of the community have demonstrated a tendency to be confused on the exact definition and continue to report things which fit their own personal viewpoints; today we attempt to clarify things.
Overview
The official policy for deviantART prohibits the submission of pornographic works. While the community as a whole, with few exceptions, agrees that this policy is required there are many who demonstrate a marked misunderstanding of exactly what is and is not defined as " pornographic " under the current policy. This misunderstanding often leads to many reports being marked as invalid due to the deviation not being officially considered to be pornography and dissatisfaction tends to lead to some community members attempting to explain the outcome by maligning the staff or speculating that deviantART

Well, this is surely a lesser evil- hell, if an evil at all. Remember many sites do this whether we like it or not, and some don't even state it on their TOS (Or if they do, they use rather vague terms and references), so at least regarding this, I'm completely fine.

And I agree with =Charlie-Brown, until it starts to say "When you visit deviantART you lose all your rights and give up all your money to deviantART"...
