HAPPY EIGHTH BIRTHDAY DEVIANTART!

deviantART will celebrate it's 8th magical year of world wide web dominance this Thursday, August 7th! Two years shy of a decade baby! Eight years on and still going strong. The 8 year mark sees us with over 8 million deviants, over 60 million deviations and record breaking amounts of commentary from all across the site. This year also saw the launch of Version 6, as well as deviantART's first forays into the convention circuit with Anime Expo and next week will see us at SIGGRAPH as well.

So come one, come all, to forty eight hours of Birthday shenanigans! That's right, 24 hours is simply not enough time for us to express the glee and giddiness of this glorious gala! As many of you know, the Mature Content filter was changed pretty drastically to an 18 and older system. This was necessitated by abuse of the system and was put in place as a stop gap measure while we gathered in depth opinion from the community as to what they desired to see in place, and from the artists who post such work.
If you would like to see the course of those events please check out my last several journals as they document this as well as other policy related discussions.
That said, we have made some pretty significant changes to the filtering system to allow for the most flexibility to everyone involved, from viewer to artist. One of the biggest issues we faced was people simply not marking their work if it was mature content or not, and this was mainly due to that option being buried at the bottom of the submission process. To balance that we have now made checking yes or no to Mature Content mandatory to complete your submission. T

For the past 5 years our very own $Moonbeam13 has been involved in supporting and raising money for The Weekend To End Breast Cancer event in Toronto.

She has done this in a fairly quiet and discreet way so we felt it was time to shed a bit more light on what exactly she does for this great cause.

To give a bit of background, in the past 4 years this organization has raised over 60 million dollars in donations and through this has made some landmark strides in advancing the research on breast cancer, which claims the lives of close to 50,000 women a year and about a quarter million women diagnosed per year.

In many cultures, Spring is traditionally a time which brings a period of time where you take time out to give your house a good cleaning, get rid of any unwanted items which have been gathering dust for a while, and generally put everything back in it's right place.
I always hear that people consider deviantART to be their home -- I know I do -- so why not apply this thought to our devious home too?
The Big Spring Clean project is aimed at doing just that very thing. Making sure that our galleries are spick and span, and that everything is in it's right place. Miscategorised (miscats) deviations are about to feel a sweeping of brushes from all sides, and we'd like you get your sleeves rolled up to help out.

Account SecurityOnce every week or so we here at CEA and the Helpdesk encounter a situation where someone’s account has been accessed by an intruder who has inflicted some sort of vandalism or locked out the owner completely.
In this article I’ll try to explain some basic security concepts and various schemes that intruders will use in an attempt to take advantage of carelessness.
Most victims of unauthorized access see their gallery deleted, their journals wiped out and often their password and email information is changed in order to lock out the rightful user. Many times the invaded account is used to break policy and wreak havoc about the site until it is banned.
In almost every case the victim has unwittingly helped the invader gain access through carelessness and poor habits. In those cases where a stranger has gained access it is usually due to poor log out habits or being caught in a phishing scheme.
