Orphan Works



There is a bit of a panic going on at the moment over the proposed Orphan Works Bill. This is something that has been a proposal for several years and is one of dozens of ludicrous bills that hit's the congress floor. This one though is bordering on becoming urban legend-esque in it's stature , complete with tinfoil stories of the bill being back by none other than Bill Gates himself!

wtf am I talking about? Well, if you don't know, or think you do know but only know what you know from reading someones alarmist news article or journal, I suggest you hit up ye olde google and start doing some of your own research and draw your own conclusions. Miss $Moonbeam13 also shines some light on the subject here and Mister $realitysquared offers up his own dissection here as well.

But honestly, I cannot stress enough the need for you to educate yourself on the subject. We are getting feedback from legal experts who can cut through the hype and hyperbole of the issue and will give us the straight story and we can go from there. But considering this bill has died 3 times now, odds are it ain't getting up and running.

So please, please stop Chicken Littling and spreading fear and paranoia

I love all you guys dearly but I swear sometimes you are like the mobs that form up at the drop of a hat on The Simpsons and you just cause yourselves a lot of undue panic and stress :)

Now, if we get told this thing actually is something of real consequence and needs to be fought, then you can safely look to us to lead the way and we will do it in an organized manner instead of scattered all over the place. There's close to 7 million of us now so let's use that to our advantage and stay chill for now till we know if we should go on the war path :)

I honesty was a bit unsure of why the big concern. Im not saying that I would want to fall victim to any of the scenarios described in the links, but all the links provided were to opinionated articles that had no link to the actual wording of the law. I had to google that myself.

but yeh. the mentality of the community upon seeing paraphrases of paraphrases of paraphrases of summaries of paraphrases of the bill was, if nothing else, intimidating and a little funny.

I wasn't panicked. I've seen way to many supposed abuses by the government to get to excited by something as ludicrous as this.
