MC Filter Part 2-UPDATE 2.0

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 16, 2007, 4:08 PM

MC Filter Updates

The Mature Content Filter

**UPDATE**

Tomorrow ( Wednesday ) a meeting is taking place between myself, the Community Development team and $Moonbeam13, head of Artist Relations, to discuss changes to the MC filter and I will be updating you all shortly after that.

I appreciate all the feedback that has been given immensely. By and large it has been awesome, and extremely informative. Thanks for your patience on this!

-------------
Okay, take a deep breath, exhale, inhale, relax. The lat journal and the MC filter issue got everyone pretty excited, and you know what? I'm glad. It should. This is an art community and often times the last thing you see people discussing intelligently, passionately, angrily, irrationally , with feeling is art!
Or the fundamental principles behind art, and that art should mean freedom. Was this change to this feature done intentionally in the manner it was to raise such a reaction to get people to really step up and talk?
Damn straight it was.

Was the truth of the matter that we had planned fully on asking what the community wanted and would allow the community to shape the full functionality of it beyond the basic framework we laid down?
Again, that answer is yes.

Why do it this way and cause some ruckus and not put it to the community first? Simple, in my experience there are two ways of doing things and both yield decidedly different results and for different reasons you utilize one or the other. This was one of those situations where I wanted honesty and thought. Putting it out first would have been met with a veritable tide of "this idea sucks, don't change it" or "make it strict" but not much more beyond that and that is essentially useless.
With a subject like this that has long reaching repercussions into the very concept of what is and isn't art, I wanted passion and real thought, and as an artist I know the best way to get your brain in gear is to be told what you can and cannot do in black and white terms.

And to no surprise you guys delivered and for the most part delivered with amazing maturity and exceptionally well thought out ideas and insights and above all, showed with no need for clarification that you care about art.

So will this system be changed? Of course it will as this was always the intent, and now it will be changed in a way that you guys want. And it need not be that complicate initially since sometimes the most complex ideas can be handled with this most brilliantly simple suggestions like this one from `Mrcrapinson
This is the angle we will be approaching it from with a few minor adjustments needed for particular cases and tomorrow I am meeting with my entire team to discuss this idea as well as dozens of others presented here, so thank you to all of you who took the time to offer up some serious critical thinking on the subject.

We will also be addressing the issue of people no longer being able to access their own MC content as that is more of a bug than an intentional change, but perhaps it will help you as artists re-evaluate both what you submit and why you felt they needed to be tagged in that manner in the first place.

And apologies to pissing the rest of you off by doing it the hard way ;)

But this is also necessary to get this whole line of thought in your heads for the real issue I want to get into once this is all sorted, and that is the concept of censorship itself and where DA stands now on it, and where we all would like to see it stand in the future, so keep that idea in mind.

Well, I'm glad things are getting around to being resolved. I swear, if I had to read another "MC wtf" journal again...But, I did notice the only people complaining where those underage. *sigh*

Oh ya, congrats on pissing people off and getting some to leave because they're too immature to wait until they've heard what's really going on

Looking forward to the changes so people will stop complaining.

I've seen alot of angry posts in my watch list about this, but I feel you guys went about it the right way. It doesn't affect me, but I'm looking forward to things calming a bit with the masses when the changes go through. Keep up the fine job you guys do.

MrCrapinson is right! (thats a sentance i never thought i would say)

I think the anime porn and inflation porn (richard, im looking at you....) should be more strictly removed

but the bewbs, are art.. anatomy is learned in art9 (14year olds) and sex in general is learnt in grade 4 (9 year olds)

Supression is just taking the art out of human form

Horribly intrusive watermarks are tacky. If you're concerned about people stealing your photos, don't post them on the internet.

Photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event. (HCB)

That comment had an amazing idea, and personally, I think it would solve most of the problems with the MC filter.

Looking forward to the change!

I cannot believe so many deviants care. I have the mature filter on and I'm nearly 56-years old. I only click "view deviation anyway" if it is from a deviant I know. I inadvertently came across a disturbing deviation that was erotic and not art (I reported it at the time) and decided I did not wish to come across such a deviation again. I have no problem with nudity. Full-on erections from naked men at the beach I DO have a problem with :wow:
