Artist's Comments

“He wandered lonely for many a day. Looking and searching for something.
Inside he felt empty. He did not know what it was he was looking for.
And then he looked and he saw something.
He saw someone small and down and far from feeling.
“He’s like me” he thought.
“If I go to him we can talk and find common ground and laugh and cry and fly and sing!”

So off he went.

And at first it was good. It was something that filled that loneliness.
That feeling of empty flight. Flight from what?
Running from nothing, but such a big nothing that it filled him with a feeling of fear so large he had no choice but to run.

They talked and laughed and shared things with each other.
They would sit and whittle away the hours laughing and clucking.
All the while one not knowing the other was feeling contempt.

Contempt toward himself for letting the Other enter his life.
Contempt for letting his guard down.
Regret and Loathing and Dreaded Embarrassment for letting this…

This Other…into his world.

The Other knew him too well now…oh yes he did. His joking and laughing turned to barbs and insightful dissections of his character. His sticks and stones became words that could one day hurt him.

So he knew what he must do. He must go wander again. Walk the Earth with his own two feet and his worn out sole.

The Other never saw it coming. Such is the way of a Friend.”

The Moral of the Story; Birds should never trust men that claim to be their friend.

Make of this what you want. I decided to do something a bit different and scrawled out some conte crayon nonsense in the form of a little parable/fable/foible/anyotherloftyconcep tthatfits.

By the way. I am not this bleak. Just got into the role for this one. :)

I'm really digging this style lolly. All of the frames look cool and the story you put behind it....I suppose makes sense ;) My favorite part is the first frame...for some reason the blank stare reminds me of the statues on Easter Island :o

Very cool lolly.....

Thanks man. And I can dig an Easter island reference. that's a huge compliment in my opinion. In a way, the little story I treid to tell in this doesn't differ a whole hell of a lot form your sig either. :)

what is this shit masquerading as art? I can't even critique, I'm so pissed off.

just kidding. I've never looked at your work before, but this I like :) Do you dig on any of the work out of Drawn and Quarterly?

Hmm....leme think...Chris Ware and Joe Sacco? Nah...I don't dig them much at all! I worked for a comicshop that specialized in Indy books till it went out of business while I lived in Madison. I am a huge D&Q fan.

Hard truth: it's really good.

It's an interesting departure from the style of your photography or 3d (for good values of interesting). Compositionally it's oddly dsitressing, which I am gathering was the desired effect. I like the pacing and the line weights. They give off a visceral feel. The only thing I find distracting in the text at the bottom -- it's probably just the font, or it might be the size/color....but it is distracting.

"You knew darn well I was a snake before you took me in."

I agree with zeruch, the font is a little annoying. I dunno, the rest of it comes across very well as an adult fable, but the font seems too...I hesitate to say gothy, but you'll probably get what I'm saying. The title has that sort of...not eloquence but verbosity, that quickly jumps the cusp between potent and pretentious, and the font pushes it too far into the "I'm trying really hard" 15 year old frameset.

Gee, that's a bit sesquipedalian.

Anyhow, I like it, I like the story, the title on the bottom is good, but different font. Something more stoic and less "I am the favorite font of Raven the Unloved (level 13 malkavian on saturday nights)."

I'm pretty friendly with Peggy Burns, (publicist) actually. I work for the museum of Cartoon and Comic art in NYC. I'll be travelling in to do some more work with them next weekend actually. Presently I'm working on the Will Eisner exhibit coming in May and on a regular basis I'm trying to organize their grant application structure. (not that you needed to know all that, I just have a hard time saying one thing without explaining the rest...anyway)

I've not spoken with Peggy for quite a while, but I've just given my brother a fistful of art supplies and hopefully he'll give me something concrete that I can help him submit there. Anyhow! We should talk sometime :)
