A commissioned piece for $makepictures He hates lawyers. ;)

Inspired by the fantastic Warren Zevon song;

"Well, I went home with the waitress
The way I always do
How was I to know
She was with the Russians, too

I was gambling in Havana
I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money
Dad, get me out of this

I'm the innocent bystander
Somehow I got stuck
Between the rock and the hard place
And I'm down on my luck
And I'm down on my luck
And I'm down on my luck

Now I'm hiding in Honduras
I'm a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money
The shit has hit the fan

Send lawyers, guns and money...
"

I like how the composition of this piece reads. In terms of focus it creates a sort of pyramidal effect, as the pistols dominate the image and lead the eyes down to the scales and money. Also, something I notice after staring for a little bit: the background being flat and two-dimensional on the left versus the seemingly infinite pile of money on the right seems to generate a kind of cylindrical effect. To me, that gives the picture a kind of depth beyond the surface images, which is quite a nice touch. The general chaos of the piece, the blood-splatter effects and such also add that little bit of something I've noticed is representative of your work, too.

I'm not sure if the irony in representing the "lawyers" with scales was intentional, but it got a laugh out of me anyway. Sure, lawyers legally strive for justice, but half of them are out to better their own ends in the long run. It was some well-chosen imagery, anyhow.

I would have liked to see a little more colour variance on the left side of the picture, though. The red and green tones work well together, but the scales in yellow seem a little monotonous for me. A foray into the more golden hues of yellow (as opposed to the green-based hues seen here) may have worked well and remedied this somewhat. Aside from that, however, I don't have any other major hangups with this piece.

On the whole I think this is a well-executed piece, even if the application of the images seems a little simplistic. Despite that, it actually reads deeper than the images themselves - works inspired by songs are often like that, I've noticed. And as a final note, the impact of the piece is superb. If naught else, it does manage to hit one in the face like a beautifully artistic trainwreck.

All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring.
