An interpretation of the book The House of Leaves

Once upon a time....a family..an estranged family...tried to find a way to regain some common ground...so they bought a House.

or is this a story of a man who is trying to come to terms with his own problems and an extremely disturbing incident that happened in his parent's H ouse?

Or is it much more than that?

If you've read the book...you know what I'm talking about..and if you respond to this and want to talk about this book please please please mark your post as having spoilers for those who haven't read it.

And if you haven't read it.....go find it. Immediately. You will not read anything quite like it. I promise.

And much thanks, shit, thanks does not cover the amount of gratitude I have toward $spot for sending this seemingly innocent package to my doorstep.
A quite unassuming box from Amazon. I open it, and it's just a book. A book he highly recommends, but then again, we all have friends who "highly recommend" you read this or book or check out this website or this artist don't we?

And since they are friends we think "Oh, this'll be cool".

What we DON'T assume is that they have dropped a bomb in your lap.

And this book is just that.

It's a time bomb, and it begins ticking with the first page you open. At first it seems innocuous enough, possibly even a bit boring....but then 20 pages go by, and something strange starts to happen. Imperceptible at first...but sooner or later it digs in.
You start to dream about it. You can't stop reading it. You think of dozens of theories of what it could mean but every page further in redefines those theories and makes them irrelevant.

Ahh...I'll shut up. Either you've read it or you will read it.

I only purchase books for friends when I really believe they will enjoy them.

Meaning that I never ever ever ever buy books for friends. I had a feeling about you.

I am very happy that it .... changed you.

Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Reports of _your_ demise have been premature, but accurate.

changed me...it broke me! lol!

*SPOILER******

In addition to it just being intense, I finish reading it on May 5th, my birthday, and what do I read LAST???

The letter form the Whalestoe informing Johnny that his mother has died. When is the letter dated? MAY 5TH......

Okay, and here's where it gets wierder. The "Whale" and the Whalestoe obviously and for specific reason..heh..echoes the Bible story of Jonah and the Whale. Well, diring my ubpringing, I was raised Mormon, and the Mormon church once a month had one of the children give a "sermon", meaning, thier parents helped them out etc. I didn't get help or ask for it, because when they asked me if I would, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. My favorite Bible stroy. Jonah and that big old Leviathan that swallowed up all the people. As a kid I thought it was jsut cool. The whale seemed awesome. I wanted a toy of it. So as a five year old lad I gave a sermon to the entire adult congregation, complete with drawings I had done of the wahle eating everybody's ass.
I have pictures and other evidence to prove this.

At, 8, 10 and 12 I got to do the sermon thing again, and rained fire and brimstone in the form of the story of Lot and the good ol' Pillar of Salt, the Wals of Jericho, and the Coming of the Beast. And I honestly chose all those subjects simply becuase they seemed like the coolest stories in the Bible, and I could draw all of them!

You should. Honestly, if you make yourself read/buy/steal one book, this is it. It's a work of art on all levels.

I read it, and it's fucking awesome. The story and the style of it, so mind-boggling. It makes you think, and when you think you know what's going on, it probably just means you're more lost then before :) I loved it. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I know exactly where you're at in the book, and yeah, jesus. That's where the tension just builds. Plus the way it cuts to lengthy footnotes from Truant right in between. Then the different voices given to each character. I found that I had to mentally check myself every hour or so reading this book. Like, take a look at the cover and go.."Oh yeah, this is a NOVEL, written by..etc balh blah." The way it's presented amkes you constantly consider it to be factual. But then agin, maybe it is. I did find a copy of The Navidson Record at video strore so who knows...

I have to say, I have never read anything even remotely like it. And I've read a lot of different styles of literature over the years.
The whole concept on face value alone is just great

*spoiler alert***
( and I assume if anyone read past these two posts they are willing to read spoilers so i no longer care )

But just the basic black and white story of, "some guy" who finds a bunch of messed up writings of a guy who is dead, and said writings are based on a supposed non-existant documentary made by an extremely famous photographer??

That alone gives the average reader a sense of mental vertigo. Combine that with all the footnotes, studies on mathematical theory, mythology, architecture, religion..and..shit...this book is in a category all of it's own.
